What is a Contract Lift, and When is it Needed?

When it comes to moving heavy machinery or other oversized loads, contract lifts play a crucial role in ensuring the job is done safely, legally, and efficiently. A contract lift is a service provided by specialist lifting companies like us here at Finch of Bookham, where we take on the responsibility for the planning, execution, and safety of the lifting operation. This differs from a simple crane hire, where the customer would be responsible for many of these aspects.

What Does a Contract Lift Involve?

In a contract lift, Finch of Bookham handles everything, including:

  1. Risk Assessments: We carry out a full site survey and risk assessment to identify any hazards and plan how to mitigate them.
  2. Lift Planning: A qualified Appointed Person is designated to develop a detailed lift plan, specifying equipment, method statements, and safety protocols.
  3. Provision of Personnel: We supply all necessary trained personnel, including the crane operator, riggers, and slinger signallers.
  4. Equipment: All lifting equipment, such as cranes, gantry, cube jacks, hydra-slide, slings, and lifting beams, are provided and maintained by us at Finch of Bookham.

When is a Contract Lift Needed?

A contract lift is typically required in situations where:

  1. Complex or High-Risk Lifts: If the lift involves complex machinery, large structures, or is in a confined or hazardous area, a contract lift ensures professionals handle everything.
  2. Lack of Expertise: If the client does not have the knowledge or personnel to manage the lift safely or legally, a contract lift provides peace of mind.
  3. Insurance Requirements: Many companies opt for contract lifts because the lifting company covers insurance, reducing the risk for the customer.
  4. Compliance with Regulations: Lifting operations must comply with strict health and safety regulations (such as the UK’s LOLER and PUWER), and a contract lift ensures compliance with these laws.

The Difference Between Contract Lift and Crane Hire

In crane hire, the customer simply hires a crane and driver, while taking responsibility for planning, safety, and insurance. However, for more complex operations, the customer may not have the expertise or legal coverage required, which is why contract lifts are preferred. In short, a contract lift offers a comprehensive, fully managed solution for heavy lifting, ensuring safety, efficiency, and legal compliance. Get in touch for more details and a free quote.
