Fuel Tank Installation for Green Mountain

For the Green Mountain project, involving the installation of fuel tanks 1 & 2, Finch of Bookham successfully carried out a precise a methodical process. Here’s an overview of the steps taken during the operation.

Delivery and Preparation

The delivery vehicle, under the guidance of our designated banksman, was driven onto the site and positioned in accordance with the lift plan, under the supervision of our Lift Supervisor. The load straps were removed by the driver to ensure the vehicle, and the load were ready for lifting.

Four 15-ton slings were then attached to the hook, connected down to oversized bow shackles rated at 8.5 tons or higher. Once the rigging was secure, we positioned the hook directly above the centre of the fuel tank in preparation for the lift.

Lifting Procedure

Under the direction of our banksman, the crane hook was raised, securing the sling arrangement in place. A hand line was attached to the generator to maintain control throughout the lifting process.

We then lifted the fuel tank from the trailer bed, slewed it 90 degrees, and carefully lowered it into the designated aperture of the building. Our Lift Supervisor directed the exact location, utilizing 24,000 kg machine skates to ensure smooth positioning. Once the tank was set, the lifting equipment was removed.

Moving the Tank into Position

Using our SL60 gantry system, we skated the fuel tank into position. The SL60 Gantry Operator positioned the lifting lugs over the designated lifting points, and our slinger attached oversized shackles and nylon slings from the lifting beams to the tank’s lifting points.

The gantry beams were raised, securing the slings and shackles in position. Once everything was confirmed, we lifted the tank clear of the front set of skates and manoeuvred the gantry jacks along the track into the plant room.

When the back skates were positioned beneath the second beam of the gantry, the process was repeated to lift the rear of the tank. With the tank fully elevated, our operator carefully travelled the tank into the plant room, clearing the temporary platform. We then lowered the tank onto the 24,000 kg machine skates.

Final Positioning

With the tank safely on the skates, our rigging team used our tirfor mechanical aid to skate the tank into its final position within the plant room. The tank was lifted using hydraulic toe jacks, the skates were removed, and the tank was lowered to the ground.

Completion

We repeated the same process for fuel tank 2, ensuring both tanks were safely and precisely installed for the Green Mountain project.
