W Finch & Co Ltd is possibly the oldest surviving family run business in Bookham.

In 1924 Walter Finch, together with his family, moved from a rented farm on Bookham Common, not far from the village of Downside to The Homestead, Eastwick Road, Great Bookham. This was part of the Eastwick Estate which once belonged to the Hon. William Keswick. The principle property was called Southey Hall and the whole site was divided up into various lots. Eastwick School was built on the same site around 1957. One of the lots was an old cottage with barns, a blacksmiths shop, stock yard and various outbuildings. This was the Homestead.

At the time Bookham was small, rural and changing. The railway had brough London closer and some families who lived in London, bought a second home in Bookham for weekend and holiday breaks. A once small village began to expand. Walter’s business prospered.

Along with the houses and bungalows, the roads were spreading too and every construction needed its materials moved. At Bookham Station the goods trucks arrived laden with bricks, sand, tiles and timber. There were teams of men to unload the trucks by hand into tip carts drawn by horses to carry them to their various destinations around the village. Walter’s transport business was at the heart of the building boom.

Walter

In 1942 Walter’s son, Walter known as Snowie, married Elsie. He worked with his father but six months later was called up and posted to Hong Kong with the RAF. The war was to bring hard times for everyone, not least for Walter’s business. When Snowie returned in 1946 the business was struggling to stay afloat but peacetime did bring new opportunities. In 1949, a certain Mr Spencer, was building a new type of machine in a garage at Effingham for cleaning clothes, called a dry cleaner. The machine was enormous and it needed careful handling. He asked Snowie if his trucks could move the massive machine because he hoped to have customers nationwide. It was the beginning of a large new business and a relationship between the two companies that would endure for many years. Finch trucks started moving individual machines then progressed to whole laundries. The expertise they acquired in handling machinery on this scale during the 1950s and 1960s was to stand the Finch business in good stead for many years to come. By now the coal business was taking up valuable machine storage space in the yard and Snowie decided to sell the goodwill and customer base to Charringtons. With more available space there was room for more vehicles and machine storage which was on the increase.

Walter died in 1963 and Snowie continued to run a fully fledged transport business which didn’t just move dry cleaning machinery, but anything from an aeroplane built in a London mews property to boats, machine tools, safes and sculptures. They moved equipment from schools and colleges, local councils and shops to mention just a few. With their lifting expertise with special equipment they could move items in and out of basements, through windows, up stairways, down lift shafts and onto rooftops.

Snowie’s son, Richard, joined the company in 1967 after spending 18 months in a commercial garage learning about commercial vehicles. Snowie died in 1981 and had built a business which now stood on solid foundations with a reputation that extended far beyond the village in which he had been born and where it all began. From 1 ton trucks to 38 ton vehicles, equipped to load and unload themselves, plus specialised plant and equipment from forklift trucks, cranes, skates and jacks to meet the needs of every eventuality.

W Finch & Co Ltd customer base goes far beyond their origins with Neil and Spencer. It now includes household names such as Harrods, Glaxo, Welcome, McLarens Racing, The National Grid, The BBC, The Science Museum, Waitrose and many more.

The Finch family tradition of passing the torch to the next generation continued with the arrival of Andrew, Richard’s son and Snowie’s grandson, who joined the company in 1992. Andrew brought fresh energy and a keen eye for modernizing operations, helping the company adapt to the evolving demands of the transport and logistics industry.

In 2009, Matt, Richards youngest son, also joined the family business on a full time basis, ensuring the fourth generation of leadership was firmly in place. With their combined efforts, W Finch & Co Ltd has grown even larger and more successful, expanding its fleet, services, and client base.

Today, the company is a modern transport and logistics powerhouse, serving clients across diverse industries, from cutting-edge technology firms to world-renowned museums and luxury retailers. Their fleet now includes specialized equipment capable of tackling the most complex lifting and transport challenges, all while maintaining the same dedication to precision, reliability, and customer service that Walter Finch established a century ago.

With his arrival, the future of W Finch & Co Ltd looks brighter than ever, as the family legacy continues to evolve and flourish.
